An xmp file extension is related to the Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform. An xmp file stores metadata about photos like camera type, date, image dimensions etc.

  • The Extensible Metadata Platform or XMP is a specific type of extensible markup language used to store metadata in digital photos. Adobe introduced the format in 2001 when it released Photoshop 7. Adobe, IPTC and IDEAlliance then collaborated in 2004 to introduce the IPTC Core Schema for XMP.
  • About the XMP standard. Metadata information is stored using the Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) standard, on which Adobe Bridge, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop are built. Adjustments made to images with Photoshop® Camera Raw are stored as XMP metadata. XMP is built on XML, and in most cases the metadata is stored in the file.

You may also use an asset or content management system (CMS) that captures some file properties and displays them for you. Adobe’s Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a file labeling technology that lets you embed metadata into files themselves during the content creation process. With an XMP enabled application, your workgroup can capture meaningful information about a project.

What is xmp file? How to open xmp files?

File type specification:

xmp file icon:

The xmp file extension is associated with the Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform.

The xmp file stores metadata for example created by Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw after processing digital photo RAW files (like NEF or CRW).

XMP file doesn't contain any graphics data. It contains all information gathered by camera from proprietary and less common RAW photos like exposure, camera type, date, image dimensions etc. These information and metadata are saved together with graphic format that not support image metadata (JPG, TIFF, PNG and DNG supporting embedded metadata directly in file).

Metadata is any data that helps describe the content or characteristics of a file. You may already be accustomed to viewing and adding some basic metadata through the File Info or Document Properties box found in many software applications.

Adobe’s Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a file labeling technology that lets you embed metadata into files themselves during the content creation process. With an XMP enabled application, your workgroup can capture meaningful information about a project (such as titles and descriptions, searchable keywords, and up-to-date author and copyright information) in a format that is easily understood by your team as well as by software applications, hardware devices, and even file formats. Best of all, as team members modify files and assets, they can edit and update the metadata in real time during the workflow.

With XMP, desktop applications and back-end publishing systems gain a common method for capturing, sharing, and leveraging this valuable metadata. Adobe has taken the “heavy lifting” out of metadata integration, offering content creators an easy way to embed meaningful information about their projects and providing industry partners with standards-based building blocks to develop optimized workflow solutions.

What is a XMP file?

File with an .XMP extension contains metadata of edited RAW image files stored in a text format next to them. If we do not want to have an XMP generated for every NEF or CR2 file, it can be stored also in the DNG format which has an XMP file built in. Data stored within the XMP file may be related to its graphical properties (exposure, brightness setting, contrast or saturation), or it may contain information on copyrights, keywords, descriptions or author and also many other parameters.

The XMP format was developed by Adobe in order to standardize storing metadata in different types of files. It is used mainly by Adobe software, such as Photoshop or Bridge, in order to store metadata of raw photographs. If such file is deleted, we may lose all the changes made in Adobe software. Metadata contained in XMP files can be viewed in a standard text editor.

If you cannot open the XMP file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports XMP among those that are installed on your device.

  • Corruption of a XMP file which is being opened
  • Incorrect links to the XMP file in registry entries.

If the problem with the XMP file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the XMP file. How to associate the file with an installed software?

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.XMP) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected XMP file. From the drop-down menu select 'Choose default program', then click 'Browse' and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the XMP file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Is there one way to open unknown files?

Xmp Photoshop

Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. XMP) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
